Fourth Anniversary of the Passing of Dr. Maryam Mirzakhani

July 14 marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of Dr. Maryam Mirzakhani, a distinguished mathematician and alumna of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences at Sharif University of Technology. Mirzakhani was the first woman to receive the Fields Medal—the most prestigious award in mathematics—and served as a professor at Stanford University. After battling illness, she passed away on July 14, 2017.
She completed her high school education at Farzanegan High School in Tehran with an outstanding academic record, earning two gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad. She then pursued her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences at Sharif University. After graduation, she continued her education at Harvard University and, by the age of thirty, became a full professor at Stanford.
Her research focused on Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, and symplectic geometry.
Following a proposal by the Women’s Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society and with the approval of the International Mathematical Union, May 12 (corresponding to Ordibehesht 23 in the Iranian calendar) has been designated as the International Women in Mathematics Day.
The Dept. of Mathematical Sciences honors the memory of this remarkable alumna on the fourth anniversary of her passing.
